2011 round-up: Best albums and shows of the year.

Machine Head – ‘Unto The Locust’
– When a band garners a response as rapturous to an album as Machine Head did with ‘The Blackening’, you’ve got to step up your game for the follow up. Not only did the foursome step up their game, but they made what is – to date – the album of their careers.

Mastodon – ‘The Hunter’ – With an undeniable grab from the initial listen, Mastodon’s 2011 effort only gets better with each encounter. Anarchic and untamable, this record will be an absolute belter to hear on their tour set for 2012.

Evile – ‘Five Serpent’s Teeth’Evile admittedly have a lot of preconceived notions set upon them, the key one being they are pioneering a thrash revival. We’d prefer the term rejuvenating and this release is a stellar example of a band who can take inspiration from the classics and push forth to something new.

Boots Electric – ‘Honkey Kong’In a side step from the mass of metal, we turn to Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal’s eclectic solo project. It’s got his typical down and dirty rock sounds with a twist of salaciously good beats. We’re not saying it’s the most complex of records; we’re saying it’s just a little bit crazy, a large bit catchy and we like it.

Madina Lake – ‘World War III’While it might not be the most technically intricate album of the year, it’s certainly a triumph for the band in countless ways. Not ready to give up at the blows the world had to throw at them, Madina Lake tackled everything head on and this record is a true testament to that.

Manchester Orchestra – ‘Simple Math’ – With their sophomore effort ‘Mean Everything to Nothing’ being masterful enough to draw the warranted attention towards the band, Manchester Orchestra stripped themselves back for this record with a more questioning, more simple and utterly stunning release.

Other albums of note:
Rise To Remain – ‘City of Vultures’.
The Defiled – ‘Grave Times’
The Devil Wears Prada – ‘Dead Throne’
Twin Atlantic – ‘Free’
Black Stone Cherry –  ‘Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’.
